WASHINGTON — In this video, Jasmine Marcelin, MD, and Kelly Cawcutt, MD, MS, infectious disease physicians and co-directors of digital innovation and social media strategy at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, summarize a session at IDWeek in which they explained ways that clinicians can leverage social media for professional success.
Social media allows ID clinicians to “meet people where they are,” Marcelin said, including clinicians, residents, medical students, fellow trainees and patients.
“If they are on social media, then as infectious disease specialists, we need to feel compelled to reach them where they are and that’s why being involved in social media is important” she said.
They also offered some tips and tricks to utilize social media to engage and expand professional networks. But Marcelin and Cawcutt cautioned clinicians to think of social media as a stage, and to be intentional and thoughtful about the content they post.
“If you wouldn’t say it in a megaphone in front of hundreds of people, if you wouldn’t put the image behind you on that stage, you need to pause and consider whether it’s something you really want to be shared on social media,” Cawcutt said.
