Fox's Charles Payne suggests universal health care will kill Americans' motivation to accomplish anything in life – Media Matters for America

CHARLES PAYNE (FOX BUSINESS HOST): As far as the medical, you know, where we’re coming on health care, it seemed to me that the moderates did OK last night. Biden did OK. And because, you know, when you start talking about trillions of dollars, and how you’re going to raise that money, I still don’t think Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders — I mean Bernie Sanders have adequately explained to the American public how they get this done.

STEVE DOOCY (CO-HOST): Well, Bernie tried to explain and Elizabeth, when she had a follow-up question, did not answer the question.

PAYNE: Right.

DOOCY: But the big question is for the people who were watching the debate last night, do you think they understand the Democrats’ plans, and do they like them?

PAYNE: No, they don’t understand the plans. Because no one’s articulated the nuances of these plans at all. You know, broad brush is great. You know, OK, so I’m going to wake up one day and everything’s going to essentially be free. Life is going to be wonderful. You know, I remember FDR, one of those famous speeches was about the Four Freedoms. Three of them, I really think, were natural and we all embraced. But, you know, the idea of freedom from want. Now, you can interpret that different ways. but I think us wanting things is what drives us.

PAYNE: It’s what motivates us, it’s how we get better things. So it’s how you do go from a [unintelligible] to the moon. Because we want it.

KILMEADE: Right, there is no intermediate step.

AINSLEY EARHARDT (CO-HOST): A few of them were saying that you can keep your health insurance if you like it, or you can opt in to this government plan, which I think a lot of people, a lot of the voters, it resonates with them.
