OTUASEGA—A nongovernmental organization, Benny’s Development Initiative, BDI, has mobilized residents of Otuasega community, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, to fix their broken down electricity, dilapidated primary school and carry out other projects without waiting for government under a Community Consultative Committee, CCC, development model.
NDV learned that the community has been in darkness for four years due to debt owed the Port- Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHEDC, and waited for the state government for four years to clear the debt and revamp its worn-out school to no avail.
Executive Director, BDI, Ms Opia Benita, said: “Number one on the plan of action was power supply. So, under the CCC platform, which is complete citizens’ participation, sensitization was carried out and the community was segmented along the line of transformers serving them. Monies were collected in that regard and remitted to PHEDC and power was restored within two weeks of constituting the CCC in Otuasega community.
“The dilapidated primary school building that was also captured during the Town Hall meeting was renovated during the fourth quarter of the project life. The drainage reconstructed is the achievement for the quarter seven of the project life.
Water now flows from the problem region to the river thereby stopping the flooding that was always experienced by the occupants of the region of the community,” she said.
Benita, however, disclosed: “The project was not without challenges, but BDI was able to beat the problems and push the CCC to achieve these results. The project was carried out as desired to the fulfilment of the set goals and objectives of the project.”
An elated indigene and CCC member, Mr Godknows Osain, described the community development model as “innovative and unprecedented in the history of the community.”
