August is National Wellness Month, this month is all about focusing on self-care, managing stress and promoting happiness.
Research shows that self-care helps manage stress and promotes happiness.
Tammy Kolbo, Yoga Instructor at The Yoga Room in Hattiesburg, offered a few tips on how to manage stress and stimulate happiness.
“We have an expression at The Yoga Room we say often, ‘self-care is health care,’” Kolbo said. “If we don’t take time for ourselves, then we don’t have any energy for anybody else or for our work, relationships, or whatever.”
Kolbo says there are many healing effects when doing yoga.
“Yoga helps to increase your awareness and your thoughts, and how your thoughts create your reality,” Kolbo said. “So often we live either in the past or in the future, and we’re not really in the present moment. It teaches you so much on how we carry stress in the body, how we tend to hold our breath, and we tend to create a lot of our own pain and suffering in the body.”
Kolbo says there are other things besides yoga that can help people relax their minds and bodies.
“I really highly recommend that people take time to be out in nature,” Kolbo said. “Take time for meditation and stillness, journaling, you can create a gratitude journal. Gratefulness really helps so much when we can find things to be grateful for even in the challenges in our lives. I also highly recommend disconnecting from social media every now and then. Taking time for yourself every day is very helpful.”
