Tesoro trying to use talent, motivation to finish on top in boys lacrosse

Written by admin

The Tesoro boys lacrosse team has the makings this season of a U.S. Lacrosse Orange County champion thanks to the 11 returning All-Sea View League players on its roster.

But the Titans also are trying to overcome a history of struggles against the county’s perennial top contenders. They have lost in the second round of the playoffs each of their last five appearances, including a loss last season to eventual Orange County champion Foothill.

Tesoro coach Brian Dunn has told his players to ignore the past and stay focused on what’s ahead of them.

“Every year you have a different team,” Dunn said. “This year we have a lot of really strong players who know their roles and play hard for each other.”

The Titans beat their crosstown rival and defending Trinity League champion Santa Margarita 13-6 on March 10, and Dunn called it a “statement win.”

Tesoro outscored its league opponents 157-12 last season, but Dunn said beating Santa Margarita showed the Titans can play with anyone in the county.

Tesoro has the experience and talent to make a deep playoff run. Three of the returning Titans surpassed 45 goals last season. Carson Spooner, a Sacred Heart commit, leads the offense and has scored multiple goals in every game this season. Jason Moreta and Ryan Harrington are other key scoring options.

On defense, the Titans have two returning all-league long stick players, including Quinn Lewis who recently committed to Westminster College in Utah. Hunter Souza returns at goalie after saving 63 percent of shots on goal last season.

Zach Harrick is considered one of the most dominant faceoff players in the county. He won 62 percent of faceoffs last year and grabbed 43 ground balls.

On Tesoro’s social media accounts, each post ends with the hashtag “#forthering,” an acknowledgement of the team’s championship ambition this season.

“You can see the difference it’s made,” Dunn said. “These guys hit the gym hard and it shows on the field. They have a work ethic that is earned. Everyone says they work hard, but these guys grind it out every single night against each other.”
